Rural firefighters contain grass fire north of Dickinson

The Dickinson Rural Fire Department spent most of Easter Sunday afternoon battling a grass fire north of Dickinson.

Chief Andy Paulson said it has not been determined exactly how the fire started, though he said that it burned about 44 acres, as well as some pine tree rows on land owned by Dave Paasch about 2 miles north of Dickinson and just east of Highway 22.

“We got it contained,” Paulson said at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Stiff wind gusts didn’t help the 18 firefighters who responded to the call, Paulson said. The wind was clocked at 23 mph, he said.

“At times it probably was (more),” Paulson said.

Paulson praised the firefighters for taking time away from their families to battle the blaze on the holiday.

“They’re a remarkable crew,” he said. “They get out there, they'll take off and leave their families during holidays when the page goes off.”
