BISMARCK (AP) -- North Dakota's sandhill crane season is opening, and the state Game and Fish Department is cautioning hunters to make sure they properly identify the birds to avoid shooting endangered whooping cranes.
Rare whooping cranes sometimes fly with sandhills during their fall migration.
The sandhill crane season opens Saturday. It runs through Oct. 25 in the unit east of U.S. Highway 281 and through Nov. 1 west of the highway.
