FORT TOTTEN (AP) -- Supporters of the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname on the Spirit Lake Nation reservation have sent a letter to the governor asking him to give the Board of Higher Education more time to decide the moniker's fate.
A state Supreme Court ruling last week supported a Higher Education board decision nearly a year ago to retire the nickname and logo, which some find offensive.
Eunice Davidson of the Spirit Lake Committee for Understanding and Respect says the group feels deceived by the board, so it's asking Gov. John Hoeven to step in.
Under a settlement with the NCAA, the board and UND had until Nov. 30 to get the support of the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock tribes.
Spirit Lake members voted 774-378 a year ago to support the nickname.
