A strong spring storm is headed into North Dakota Tuesday evening and while the southwest portion of the state is expected to get between a quarter and a half of an inch of rain, some western and central areas may get more than an inch, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a special weather statement late Tuesday afternoon.

Rainfall may aggravate flooding conditions in the Souris and James river basins, according to the report.

The rain will develop Tuesday evening and into the night in northwest and north central North Dakota. Rain is expected to continue into Wednesday.

Rain is expected to change to snow from west to east Wednesday evening with less than an inch of accumulation in most areas. Two inches is possible in the far north, according to the NWS.
