Trinity rolls over Mott-Regent

The Dickinson Trinity girls basketball team finished strong in their final game of the regular season Monday night at the Knights of Columbus Activities Center.

The Titans took a 63-39 victory over Mott-Regent.

"We really thought it was important to go into the tournament with a couple wins just to get the momentum going for us, to set the tone for what practice needed to be like preparing for the district tournament," Titans coach Alysia Hugret said.

The Titans limited Mott-Regent to scoring just eight points in each of the first three quarters and had 20 steals in the game.

"They really turned it up on defense," Wildfire coach Rod Meier said. "Our guards had a tough time handling their pressure. It's something we need to take care of because we're going to keep seeing it."

Sophomore Shannon Ernst led the Titans with 16 points and four steals. Senior forward Mary Brooke contributed 12 points and five steals. Sophomore forward Breanna Messer added 10 points and seven rebounds.

"I guess the first half I was a little disappointed with the intensity we came out with," Hugret said. "That's all we really talked about at halftime is that the girls had to find that intensity somewhere within themselves. They had to start playing as a team. I thought we did a good job of that in the second half."

Trinity had a 26-16 lead at halftime and used the second half to really dig its heels in.

The Titans shot 43 percent on twopointers in the first half and kicked it up to 53 percent in the second half.

"We played Trinity a couple weeks ago, and you can tell a big difference in their shooting," Meier said. "They shot the ball a lot better tonight. We ran almost exactly the same kind of defense."

Mott-Regent senior center Gwen Coppa led the Wildfire with eight points and five rebounds.

"Our girls played hard tonight," Meier said. "I can't ask for anything more than that."
