Trojans top DSU

MADISON, S.D. -- Dickinson State coach Guy Fridley's claim that Dakota State is the best women's basketball team in the Dakota Athletic Conference might not be far off.

MADISON, S.D. -- Dickinson State coach Guy Fridley's claim that Dakota State is the best women's basketball team in the Dakota Athletic Conference might not be far off.

The Trojans had four players score in double figures Friday night as they coasted to a 93-47 DAC victory at Memorial Fieldhouse.

"They kept the train going, it's hard to stop a train when it's full speed ahead," Fridley said.

Angela Carr scored a team-high 13 points off the bench for the Trojans (17-9, 9-3 DAC) while posts Laura Tewes, Jessica VanLoy and Marin Gengler each added 12 points.

The Trojans, who outscored DSU 52-20 in the paint, built a 48-20 halftime lead behind their tough inside game.

"I thought we were pretty physical and they pushed us around and got after us defensively," Fridley said.

DSU senior Brittany Mesa scored a game-high 20 points and added six rebounds. Ashley Bakich-Emmons had 14 points, five steals and four assists.

Dakota State held a 53-28 advantage on the boards.

"They're just a very difficult match for us," Fridley said. "They not only convert on some shots, but they're a good combination of everything."

The Blue Hawks (8-18, 4-8 DAC) play Mayville State at 4 p.m. CST today.

Fridley hopes his team can forget about Friday and pick up the pieces against the Comets.

"It' still counts as one loss, that's the way we've got to take it," he said.
