Two children die in crash near Wibaux

Two children from Spokane, Wash., were killed in an accident after the vehicle they were riding in was struck by a train early Tuesday morning near Wibaux, Mont.

Two children from Spokane, Wash., were killed in an accident after the vehicle they were riding in was struck by a train early Tuesday morning near Wibaux, Mont.

The Montana Highway Patrol reported Lianne E. Nelson, 5, and Finnerty Nelson, 1, were riding with Nina Nelson, 33, and Conor Nelson, 3, at approximately 2:20 a.m. The vehicle was traveling eastbound along Interstate 94 about five miles east of Wibaux when the vehicle left the roadway and went into the ditch.

The vehicle then went through a highway fence and up and over an access road between the railroad tracks and the fence. The vehicle went up over the road and stopped on the tracks just as a train was approaching. The vehicle was then struck by the train.

Nina Nelson was taken to Dickinson's St. Joseph's Hospital and Health Center, where she is in the intensive care unit in stable condition.

Conor Nelson was taken to the Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, Minn., where he is listed in critical condition.

Further details on the cause of the accident were unavailable as of Tuesday afternoon. Road and weather conditions during the accident were clear and calm.

The accident remains under investigation.

The agencies involved were the Montana Highway Patrol, the Wibaux County Sheriff's Office, the Golden Valley Sheriff's Office, the Wibaux County and Golden Valley County ambulance services and the Wibaux County Volunteer Fire Department.
