The Cottage Grove VFW baseball team remained undefeated last week with a 9-2 victory over Inver Grove Heights.

Dan Ubl got the win for Cottage Grove on Tuesday, throwing 5 2/3 innings of two-hit ball.

"He didn't think he had one of his better pitching outings," coach Dave Gunter said. "But they only got two hits off him. We played great defense behind him. With pop-ups and slow grounders, he threw less pitches in six innings than he's thrown in four."

Ubl struck out four and allowed two runs in his outing and Deryk Marks came in to strike out three of the four final batters and earn the save.

Several players had strong outings offensively, but the most important hit came from 14-year-old Sam Altier. With the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth inning and Cottage Grove clinging to a 4-2 lead, Altier picked up two strikes before fouling numerous pitches off. Finally, Altier picked out a fastball and drilled it to the wall for a bases-clearing double.

"He just kept fouling off pitches -- it must have been eight of them," Gunter said. "It was one of those games where you still didn't know what was going to happen, but finally the pitcher made a mistake and he broke the game open."

Matt DeFlorin went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Mike Weber was also 2-for-3 with three RBI. Bryan Poland added a 2-for-4 performance.

The victory was the only game for Cottage Grove last week as last Monday's contest with Woodbury White was rained out and Friday's game with Mahtomedi was a forfeit. Four of Mahtomedi's players showed up 30 minutes after the game was supposed to start, but the umpires had already called the game.

Thursday's game with Tanners Lake was postponed until July 15 as the team didn't have enough players and the rainout from last Monday was rescheduled for July 8 at Woodridge.

Cottage Grove's next game is at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Lake Elmo.
