An elderly man is without a home after a grass and field fire destroyed his house, New England Fire Chief Joe Kathrein said this morning.
Arnold Simon, who lived on a farm six miles north of New England, was homeless last night, and chose to sleep in his car, nephew Kyle Koppinger said this afternoon.
Kathrein added that the fire, which sparked when burnt brush reignited in a field Monday, spread about 5,000 acres, and firefighters were out until 9 p.m. dousing the flames.
As of 6:30 p.m. Monday, one man was being treated for burns at St. Joseph's Hospital in Dickinson. Hettinger County Emergency Manager Ilene Hardmeyer added that low visibility, resulting from billowing smoke, was the cause of a vehicle accident.
