Washburn City Commissioners voted unanimously to enact a declaration of emergency for the city on Thursday.
The city Director, Milissa Price said, "the loss of potable water to the city of Washburn's intake from the Missouri River and influx of muddy water from the Knife River and its tributaries has contributed to contaminated water for its citizens of Washburn."
Washburn is in a dire situation and minimum water is left for residents, she added.
The Public Works superintendent said he has been in contact with the state Water Commission and that "steps are being taken to secure a pump for the city of Washburn as soon as possible."
Residents have been under a state-mandated water boil, which is a recommendation to boil all water before consumption, since Tuesday.
