WEST FARGO - An eight-legged surprise greeted a West Fargo teacher when she recently bought a package of grapes at Costco here.
Michelle Strand, who teaches at West Fargo High School and lives in Fargo, said she was cleaning the grapes and noticed cobwebs in the package. She said she made a mental note to check for spiders, when she saw a black grape with a red hourglass on it.
Though the black widow was dead, she said it was still surprising.
"I kind of freaked at that particular moment," she said.
Black widow bites can cause nausea, vomiting and rarely death.

Strand said she threw the grapes out because she thought there could have been other spiders in the package.
"It clearly had not been dead for long because it wasn't dried out," she said. "It looked like a live spider."
She said her husband was happy she cleaned the grapes, because he's scared of spiders.
