BISMARCK (AP) -- Officials around North Dakota have started surveillance activity for the West Nile virus.

State Health Department surveillance coordinator Michelle Feist (fyst) says activities include reporting and testing of sick horses and dead birds, trapping and testing of mosquitoes, and monitoring of illness in people.

Since 2002, 1,284 human cases of the mosquito-borne virus have been reported in North Dakota. Last year, there was only one confirmed case. The highest human case total in North Dakota was 617, seven years ago.
