BISMARCK (AP) -- A sheriff's officer says a 6-month-old girl died of "chronic starvation and dehydration" in Bismarck.

The child's mother, 18-year-old Stevie Buckley, is charged with manslaughter.

Burleigh County Sheriff's Cpl. Tracy Nelson testified at Buckley's preliminary hearing that the baby, named Kyra, appeared to have been deprived of adequate food for 16 days before her death last February.

Buckley pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter charge, and to charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and minor in possession. Judge Thomas Schneider found probably cause for a trial.

Buckley's attorney, Kent Morrow, says prosecutors have not provided enough evidence that Buckley recklessly caused her daughter's death.

Buckley's next court appearance is set for June 1.
