SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Six South Dakotans have died due to COVID-19, the seventh day with six or more deaths in November alone, according to the South Dakota Department of Health Thursday, Nov. 18, as active case counts continue an upward trend in the state.
The number of active cases escalated to 6,775 in the most recent update to statewide numbers, nearly 1,000 more active cases than the same time in October, as colder weather sends more South Dakotans inside. Across the state, an average of over 660 new cases a day are being reported.
Still, the average new COVID-19 hospitalizations have dipped slightly to 36 a day, with 22 new hospitalizations reported on Thursday. Throughout all hospitals in the Rushmore State, 246 individuals are being cared for with COVID-19.
South Dakota's COVID-19 death toll now stands at 2,303, the 15th highest mortality rate per 100,000 people in the nation.
Meanwhile, many South Dakotans have increasingly sought to get vaccinated against COVID-19. As of Thursday, over 92,000 people have gotten a recommended booster shot, good for nearly 20% of the state's eligible population. Over two-thirds of the state -- 64.6% -- have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, with just under 54% fully vaccinated against the deadly virus.
The following are the state Department of Health COVID-19 case rates, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of Thursday. All data is the latest available but should be considered preliminary and could be updated at a later date by health officials.
INITIAL DOSE ADMINISTERED (IF 2-DOSE VACCINE): 571,513 people, 64.6% of state's population*
FULLY VACCINATED: 476,379 people, 53.8% of state's population
*Note: The percentage presented here via the CDC differs from the state Department of Health percentage posted on its online dashboard, because the department's data indicates percentage of state population age 12 and older, not the state's total population.
