PIERRE, S.D. — The death of a Fall River woman in her 60s is the latest to be added to South Dakota’s COVID-19 death toll, bringing the state’s total to 193 on Thursday, Sept. 17.
An additional 395 new coronavirus cases were reported on Thursday, bringing the total positive case count to 17,686.
Of those, 2,615 are considered active and 14,878 are considered recovered, or no longer able to transmit the virus.
A cluster has been identified at the South Dakota Women's Prison in Pierre after a mass testing event resulted in 105 positive COVID-19 cases among the inmate population, with three of those cases having since recovered, according to South Dakota State Epidemiologist Josh Clayton.
In Hughes County, 89 new cases were announced on Thursday, which Clayton said are mostly related to the women’s prison cluster.
