The North Dakota Department of Health on Friday confirmed that a man in his 70s from Stark County died after contracting COVID-19 through community spread, marking the second victim in the county and sixth in the state.

The death Thursday comes after a Wednesday death of a man in his 60s from Stark County, who also contracted the virus through community spread. According to the department, both men suffered from underlying health issues.

Among the nine new positive cases announced by the health department Friday, Stark County had no new cases, though a Dunn County woman in her 50s was confirmed positive through community spread. The count on the Western Edge moves to 41 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Stark County, despite its relative small population compared with Burleigh and Cass counties, has the third most cases in the state at 29 — though in a population to positive cases ratio, is second in the state behind Mountrail County.

Five of the new cases announced Friday come from Cass County, all of which are of individuals aged 30-50.
