SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Nearly half of South Dakotans are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday, Sept. 9.
There are 441,859 South Dakotans who are fully vaccinated from either the one- or two-shot vaccines available, the CDC reported, totaling 49.9% of the state's population. Just over 57% of the population, 506,368 people, have gotten at least an initial shot of a COVID-19 vaccine.
At the moment, only those age 12 and older are eligible for the vaccines, but Forum News Service is tracking vaccinations among the entire state population, because those under age 12 are also capable of catching and spreading COVID-19.
The state's vaccination rate has sped up in recent weeks at the same time as COVID-19 case counts, hospitalizations and deaths have gone back on the rise. More than 13,000 South Dakotans have gotten fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in the past two weeks.
South Dakota lags the national average in terms of vaccinations. Just over 53% of the nation's population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Also, vaccination rates vary wildly across the state. While several counties are about 54% fully vaccinated against COVID-19, many remain largely unvaccinated. Harding County, which defines the northwest corner of the state, is only 14.5% — or 188 people — fully vaccinated.
The following are the South Dakota Department of Health COVID-19 case rates, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations tracked by the CDC as of Thursday. All data is the latest available but should be considered preliminary and could be updated at a later date by health officials.
