SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — South Dakota's COVID-19 surge is connected to more deaths over the last two weeks than at any point since late January, according to the analysis of data reported by South Dakota Department of Health, Thursday, Dec. 9.
Eight South Dakotans with COVID-19 have died, state health officials reported Thursday, raising the death toll to 2,392.
Of reported fatalities, 72 were listed in the last two weeks alone, which includes death certificates reported to the state Department of Health over the Thanksgiving holiday. That's the highest two-week total since the last two weeks in January.
Several other key measures of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state indicate the virus continues its months-long surge. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 rose to 270, state health officials reported Thursday, the most reported since Jan. 5. There are 76 COVID-19 patients in intensive care, while 41 are on ventilators.
And while active cases dropped slightly, falling 64 to 7,688 from the previous day, they've steadily risen since late October.
