GRAND FORKS—When the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State move back into the same football conference in 2020, the first matchup will be held in Fargo, two sources have confirmed.

That means UND will play at the Fargodome two seasons in a row.

Next season, the Fighting Hawks and Bison will play a nonconference game in the Fargodome—one that was scheduled in the summer of 2014.

In the fall of 2020, UND and NDSU will play a Missouri Valley Football Conference league game in the Fargodome.

In 2021, NDSU will return to Grand Forks for the first time since 2003, when UND won an overtime game.

Under the MVFC scheduling plan, UND and NDSU will play annually.

MVFC commissioner Patty Viverito previously said that the league plans to protect not only the rivalries like UND-NDSU and South Dakota-South Dakota State, but all of the games between the Dakota schools.

So, although not all teams in the soon-to-be 11-member Missouri Valley Football Conference play each other every year, UND will see NDSU, USD and SDSU each year.

SDSU is scheduled to come to Grand Forks in 2020.

Viverito said the member schools agreed that it was important to protect the bus games to save money on charter flights and limit wear and tear of travel. It also will likely increase attendance by playing regional rivals.

"If we had done a pure rotation, it would cost an outrageous amount of money," Viverito said in November.
