Ervin William Smith

There will be a funeral for Ervin Smith, 76, of Dickinson at 3:00 pm, Friday, May 24, 2019 at Ramada Grand Dakota Hotel, 532 15th St. W, Dickinson, ND 58601

Ervin William Smith was the only child born on June 15, 1942 to John V. and Mary (Snyder) Smith in Dickinson, ND. He died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday May 18, 2019 while in Missoula, MT.

Ervin married Susan Andrene (Gylland) on September 14, 1963 on the farm in Eastern ND where Susan grew up. They had twins named Dallas and Deanna who died only a short time after birth. Then they had three other children Travis, Andrene, and Tamara.

Ervin grew up on a farm North of Belfield, ND with his parents and he only spoke Czech. He only learned English when he attended first grade in Belfield, ND. After high school he attended trade school in Eastern ND where he met his wife, Susan. He worked for the Highway Department for a few years which caused them to move around awhile early in their marriage. Because he was raising a family he decided it would be better to not move around so much. He bought a small cleaning business in Dickinson, ND. He did cleaning and worked on his parents farm/ranch by Belfield until he retired. After his parents died he started raising buffalo on his parents ranch. Although he lived in Dickinson, he always enjoyed the peaceful life out on the farm'.

Ervin was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He enjoyed meeting and working with many persons at conventions, assemblies, construction projects and special events. He thought it was important to teach and train persons how to do things and to "do it just so". He enjoyed attending special conventions such as in Prague, Czechoslovakia where he was able to use his language that he learned as a child.

Ervin is survived by his wife Susan, their son, Travis (Sharmon) of El Paso, TX; their two daughters, Andrene (Mike) Hermanson, stepson William, two grandchildren, Kaylee and Corey Hermanson, of Gladstone, ND; Tamara (Jason) Galonski of Dickinson, ND.
