CDR Colet Brost Crooms, USN (Ret.)

On Friday, June 25, 2021, Colet (Brost) Crooms, an exceptionally dedicated mother of three children and five grandchildren passed away in Englewood, Florida. Colet was beautiful, intelligent, talented, generous and full of life. She was 66.

Colet was born on June 13, 1955 to Frank and Ann Brost in Dickinson, ND. She was one of 8 children. She lived in Gladstone, ND until 4th grade when the family moved to Stanley, ND in 1965. She graduated from Stanley High School in 1973 and the University of Mary, Bismarck, ND in 1977 with a degree in nursing. That same year, she was commissioned in the United States Navy Nurse Corps at Newport, RI. She was stationed at various Naval hospitals throughout her career including the Naval Hospital in Keflavik, Iceland. She retired in 2001 as Full Commander.

From 1989 – 2001, Colet generously volunteered her time at Trinity Catholic School in Tallahassee, FL where her three children attended. She volunteered tirelessly when chaperones were needed, supporting the school in various ways including softball coach and school nurse. From 2004 – 2011 she worked as a hospice nurse for Tallahassee’s Big Bend Hospice. She was a wonderful gift to families on this most difficult journey, providing comfort with dignity, laughter, and peace.

Colet loved the Lord, lived her Catholic faith, and had a great desire to help others. She facilitated Wednesday night Youth Group gatherings in her home and loved her scheduled Holy Hour of Adoration. She was the captain of Relay for Life for her Navy Reserve crew. Every time Colet moved to a new home, she placed a large picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus above her bed.

Colet was hilariously funny with an amazing sense of humor. She could find something to laugh about around every corner. She was caring, compassionate, and would do anything for anyone.

For the past 10 years Colet suffered from stroke induced dementia. She is now free from suffering and pain, and although our hearts rejoice for her release from the disease, we will cherish the sweet memories. We are deeply blessed she was our mom, grandmother, sister, and friend and will miss her terribly.

Colet is survived by her children Nicole (Michael) Bradica of Chuluota, FL; Colette Marie Crooms of Tallahassee, FL; Joseph (Colleen) Crooms of Englewood, FL; and 5 grandchildren: Margaret, Sarah, Joshua, Hannah, and Matthew Bradica; 7 siblings, Vern (Jan) Brost, Billings, MT; Ken (Janice) Brost, Cedar Falls, IA; Ed (JoAnne) Brost, Pasco, WA; Anell (John) Ewing, Lakewood, CO; Renae (George) Banky, Waterloo, IA; Elonda (Lee) Davidson, Stanley, ND; Della (Blaine) Nelson, Bismarck, ND and many nieces and nephews.
