Donald Armen Stoxen

<p>On Tuesday, August 27, 2019, Donald Armen Stoxen, loving husband and father passed away at the age of 89. Donald was born on August 18, 1930, to Christ and Amanda (Bauer) Stoxen. He was raised on the family farm north of Taylor, North Dakota, and attended Taylor Public Schools through high school. He attended Dickinson State College graduating in the spring of 1950 with a 2-year Standard Degree. He received his Masters in Administration from North Dakota State University in 1965.</p> <p>Following his first year of teaching in Leith, North Dakota, he enlisted in the Army Signal Corps and served three years in Trieste, Italy. Upon returning to North Dakota, he married Patricia Merrill on December 5, 1954. The couple raised three children: Samuel, Denver, CO; Kristen (Steve) Turner, Estherville, IA; and Holly (Marvin) Cook, Wheat Ridge, CO. He spent 34 years in education as both a teacher and a principal. When in Dickinson, he was the principal at Roosevelt, Jefferson, Berg, and Heart River Elementary. He retired from Heart River Elementary in 1989. </p> <p>In 1991, the couple became Snowbirds, traveling to Mesa, AZ, each fall and returning to Dickinson each spring until they became permanent Arizona residents in 2011. </p> <p>Donald was an avid reader, duplicate bridge player, golfer, and trap shooter. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, as well as a Frontiersman with the Dickinson Shriners. He was known for his kind and compassionate spirit and was a gentleman to the end. </p> <p>He was preceded in death by his father, Christ; his mother, Amanda; his brother, Orville; and his sister, Delores. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his children, Sam, Kris, and Holly; grandchildren, Shannon (Brent) Winkie, Samuel Stoxen, Kelly (Scott) Zylstra, Seth Stoxen, and Will Roeber; five great-grandchildren, five nieces, and several cousins.</p>
