(1934-2019) Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend - passed away at age 85, Sunday, Sept. 15th in Phoenix, AZ. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Helen Elizabeth Schlaht was born on Feb 3, 1934 in Regent, ND, the third of 12 children of Edwin R. Schlaht and Emelia Wolf. She grew up on the family farm in Dodge, ND, where she honed her considerable farm-to-table cooking skills to help feed the large family and farmhands on a depression–era budget. She in turn passed on her talents in the kitchen to her own children, and grandchildren. Throughout her life, when Helen would visit family and friends, the kitchen became hers, and something good was always cooking!

In her late teens, Helen met William “Willie” Schulz, and they married on Dec. 1, 1953 in Richardton, ND. Willie came from a family of 18, so with their spouses and children, Helen’s extended family immediately became enormous. There were many fun reunions on both sides of the family over the years.

Helen and Willie raised their own family of seven daughters and a son in Dickinson, ND. Helen worked, cooked, gardened, and sewed, to help support their young family. Sadly, in 1978, Willie died suddenly at the age of 48, and Helen was left to carry on alone and provide for the children still living at home.

After several years on her own, Helen met Terry Lambert, and in 1984 they were married and moved to Oregon to be near Helen’s family. Also during this time, Helen used her artistic talents to become an accomplished and award-winning painter. Her children possess many of her beautiful paintings. Helen & Terry later made Yuma, AZ their winter home, and over the next several decades, to beat the desert heat, they spent summers visiting Helen’s children in North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Colorado, and Arizona. Helen was there to help with many new grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passing on her love and her mothering skills to the generations that followed her.

Over the past several years, Helen’s health began to decline. In July of this year, she enjoyed one last hurrah with all of her family, and one last dance with Terry, attending her son’s wedding in Denver. It was a great event, and Helen was celebrated and honored by all who were there. Following the wedding, Helen returned to Phoenix, and spent her final days surrounded by her loving family.

Helen will always be remembered as someone who never stopped giving of herself to make others’ lives better. She is survived by husband, Terry Lambert, her daughters, Debbie (Jeff) Doud, Vicky (Pat) Engelhardt, Susan (Phil) Cook, Carla (Joe R.) Schulz, Connie (Harry) Anderson, Char (Jeff) Venhaus, Janel (Jeremy) Richardson, and son Brad (Lovice) Schulz, 18 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Her life goes on in all of us. She was predeceased by Willie Schulz, parents Edwin & Emelia Schlaht, sisters: Linda, Elma, Janice & Delores and brother, Arlin.

A special thank you for the kind and attentive care-giving by family and Hospice.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
