Marian Brown passed away peacefully Feb 9th in Santa Cruz, CA at the age of 93. Marian Laverne Maier was born in New Salem, North Dakota and grew up in Judson, North Dakota, a small town of less than 100 people. There were only 9 in her high school class. She shared a bedroom with her sister Iris until they went to college and the two were always very close. At age 17 Marian started teaching at a one room country school, and then went to college in Dickinson, North Dakota where she met Gordon Brown who she married in 1951. She taught 2nd grade in Dickinson and her two sons Kyle and Eric were born there. In 1965 they moved to Santa Cruz where Marian would again teach, this time in the Live Oak School District for many years.

Marian was an active volunteer, working at The Daisy thrift shop, election polls, visiting shut-in seniors, and the Red Cross. Helping people was in her nature, she was a Stephen Minister, led a program called Memory Lane for seniors in assisted living, and was a volunteer with Dominican Hospital Auxiliary. She loved music and was in the choir at the First Congregational Church for many decades. Marian also attended Twin Lakes church where she and Gordon were members of a small group.

She enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the DeLavega Women’s golf club. Marian and Gordon were both charter members of Spa Fitness (now InShape) where Marian went to yoga classes up to the age of 88. Marian also loved playing Bridge and was in many groups over the years. Marian was a member of the UCSC Women’s Club, and was president in 1973-1974. After Gordon passed away in 2007, Marian reconnected with an old college friend, Roger. They enjoyed laughing together, playing the piano and singing songs, and took many trips.

Marian spent the last 5 years of her life living at Aegis of Aptos, where she participated in all the activities and received lots of love from the caregivers. We thank Aegis for taking such great care of Marian for all those years.

She always had a kind word to say and tried to lift others up, and was always willing to help those in need. Marian was a compassionate and loving mom, grandma, friend and neighbor. She will be remembered for her bright smile and cheerful demeanor. Marian was happy and joyful right up to her last days, she was a sweetheart!

She is survived by sons Kyle Brown (Gina) and Eric Brown (Sylvia), grandchildren Forrest, Heather, and Serena, great grandson Logan, all from Santa Cruz, CA, nieces Dianne and Jill, and Diane’s son Corey (Trista) of Bismarck ND.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ruby Maier, husband Gordon Brown, and her sister Iris Schoregge.

Donations to Hospice of Santa Cruz or the Alzheimer’s Association are preferred.

A memorial/celebration of her life is being planned for sometime in the future.
