Dorothy Theresa (Grasser) (Hauck) Miller, 93, Richardton, died Friday, May 8, 2020 at Richardton Health Center. There will be an Immediate Family and Extended Family Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Wordekemper, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Dorothy was born on Aug. 8, 1926, in Regent, to Joseph and Anna (Mesling) Grasser of Dickinson. She attended grade school in the Aurora School District, a country school near Taylor. She graduated from Taylor High School.
In 1942, Dorothy met William “Bill” Hauck and they married on April 11, 1944, at an all-day wedding. Dorothy and Bill built a homestead north of Richardton where they farmed and ranched. Together they also raised 5 children. Dorothy was a member of the Christian Mothers at St. Mary’s and was a Farmers Union and 4-H leader for several years. She also taught country school for grades 1-8.
Dorothy and Bill spent many weekends at local dance halls where they were avid square dancers. Bill passed away in 1971.
In 1974, Dorothy met Walter Miller and they were married on Nov. 30, 1974, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. In the spring of 1975 they built a new home in the city of Richardton. They enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren and playing cards with family and friends. Dorothy spent a great deal of time quilting, making various crafts, gardening and canning. She also researched her family and her in-laws’ heritage and eventually wrote several family history books.
Dorothy and Walt spent several winters in Florida, Texas and Mesa, Ariz. Walt passed away on Aug. 9, 2007. Dorothy moved to Hawk’s Point in Dickinson in 2010 and later she moved to Evergreen where she enjoyed spending time with several friends. She spent the last three years in the Richardton Health Center.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Eugene Hauck, Dickinson; Gerald Hauck, the Philippines and Richardton; Charlotte (Ambrose) Hoff, Richardton; Bonnie (Stan) Case, Battle Lake, Minn., and Dorie (Dave) Kandler, Lakeville, Minn.. Dorothy is also survived by a brother, Robert (Vi) Grasser; 13 grandchildren: Jim (Traci) Hauck, Tracy (fiancée-Hollie) Hauck, Justin (Michelle) Hauck, Douglas (Dori) Hauck, Jody (Marla) Hoff, Tanja (Ryan) Goellner, Daneen (Ty) Dressler, Kalvin (Caitlin) Hoff, Kristie (Nils Hoeger-Lerdal) Case, Nathan Case, Blaize Kandler, Talon Kandler and Kaden Kandler; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Anna and Joseph Grasser; her first husband Bill Hauck; her second husband Walter Miller; sisters Ann Schiwal, Pauline Cossette Grandbois, Agnes Cossette; and one grandson, Dean Hoff.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the St. Mary’s Cemetery Renovation Fund.
