Virginia was born to Paul and Helen (Lemire) Wehrman on February 16, 1944 and was the second youngest of nine children. Virginia grew up on the family ranch on Garner Creek south of Sentinel Butte where she loved to ride horse. She attended grade school in Golva, ND and graduated from Priory High School in Bismarck, ND with the class of 1962. Virginia received her teaching degree from Mary College in Bismarck, and student taught in Mott, ND.
Virginia married her childhood friend, Irvin Bares, on August 20, 1966 in Golva and began teaching in Elgin, ND where Irvin was teaching Vocational Agriculture. Virginia and Irvin left teaching to take over the Bares family farm east of Beach. It is here she raised and nurtured eight children. Once the kids got older, Virginia re-entered the work force as a substitute teacher. She was elected to be Superintendent of Schools for Golden Valley County in 1989. Virginia was additionally appointed to the same position for Billings County in 1993, retiring from both in 2010.
Virginia was a devout Catholic and was glad to share her beliefs with others. She was active in her parish with the Catholic Daughters and the St. Anne’s Guild. She spent many years teaching CCD, reading at Mass, and adoration chapel. Virginia was an avid reader, sewer, and spent many hours tending to large family gardens. As a hardworking farm wife, she spent many hours in the kitchen baking, preserving, and making hearty meals for the family. Caring for the baby chicks and orphaned lambs every spring was another specialty of hers. Her involvement in This ‘n That Homemakers club allowed a monthly escape from her duties!
