Iris Schumann, age 87, of Waubun, MN, died on Sunday, September 4, 2022, under the care of her family and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Iris Louise Brotherton the only daughter of Marion “Sonny” and Regina (Huhn) Brotherton was born November 19, 1934, in Unity County, Wisconsin. She grew up on a small dairy farm in the Colby, WI, area. Iris’ family lived with her grandma, whom she spent many hours working alongside. She learned how to cook, iron wash laundry, and how to host a gathering. While she was in high school, Iris met Donald Schumann and they were united in marriage on July 18, 1953, in Ada, MN. Don’s employment building power lines took them to Timber Lake SD, Linton, Hazelton, Beulah all ND, Bemidji MN, Berthold, Sherwood, Westhope, Parshall, Stanley, Watford City, Kenmore, Velva all ND & Wadena MN. In 1959, Don & Iris moved to Rainbow resort, near Waubun and were active in the startup and operation of the resort with the founders, Iris’s in laws Al and Gladys Schumann, along with other close family members. In 1963, they moved to Bowman, ND where Don took a full-time job with Consolidated Telephone. Don was transferred to Richardton, ND in 1967. In 1995, Don and Iris moved fulltime to their cabin on Little Bemidji Lake by the resort. Over the years, Iris worked various jobs. She was employed at local grocery stores and hotels and helped at the local funeral home for a time. Iris and Don were blessed with three children, Doug, Gail, and Keith and by far, her most precious job was being a wife and mother. She adored her family and always had their best welfare in mind. She raised her children with high ethics and a frugal budget. After the ownership of Rainbow Resort returned to the Schumann family in 1997, Iris spent many hours helping her son and daughter-in-law run a successful business. She helped around the resort for many years. She happily entertained guests, cleaned, and served as the unofficial social director. Iris and Don especially enjoyed clearing trails, ranger rides in the woods, and taking the boat out on the lake. In her younger years, Iris also liked bowling and hosting neighborhood pinochle parties. When friends and family were around, Iris always had fun. She made sure there was plenty of food and no one ever went hungry. Her bubbly personality, excited little wiggle, tender eyes, and genuine smile touched everyone around her.
Iris is survived by two sons, Doug (Linda) Schumann and Keith (Ann) Schumann; six grandchildren: Leah, Dean, Kris, Kari, Taylor, and Isabel; nine great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Mike (Amy) Schumann. She was preceded by her parents; husband, Don; daughter, Gail; and grandson, Colby.
Blessed be the memory of Iris Schumann.
