Robert Opheim, 86, formerly of rural Lodgepole, SD passed away at Essentia Health, Fargo, ND on Sunday, December 15, 2019.

The Funeral Service for Robert will be held at 1:00pm MT Saturday, December 21, 2019 at the Centennial Chapel of the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger. Burial will be in the Hettinger Cemetery with full military honors by the Johnson-Melary American Legion Post #115 of Hettinger. Robert Louis Opheim was born August 27, 1933 to Oscar and Mabel (Nelson) Opheim in Hettinger, ND.

Robert spent his childhood on the family farm homesteaded by his Grandfather Sam Opheim in Holden Township of Adams County, ND, southwest of Bucyrus.

Robert graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1952. He held a variety of jobs/side jobs including working at the Holy Terror Mine in Keystone, SD, capping honey, driving school bus and other various jobs, until settling into full time farming. He served active service in the United States Army from December 1957 to December 1959.

On December 27th, 1965 Robert married Ina Hendry at the St. Matthews Lutheran Church, in Hazen, ND. In 1969 daughter Chloe was born with son Orson arriving in 1974. In December of 2015 Robert and Ina celebrated 50 years of Marriage.

In 1977 Robert and family moved to the rural Lodgepole farmstead in Perkins County, South Dakota. Though he would tell others that he “fell into the profession of farming” it was a passion of his. He loved watching the crops grow, enjoyed being out in the field beside wildlife, paced the floor when storms with hail or lighting came across, watching them out the bay window of the farm house, and loved to mechanic things to work or to work again, though he would complain there was always something to fix. He never had any intention to retire, but age and health interrupted his plans and in 2015 he rented out his farm with the exception of 80 acres to tinker with/on.

In 2018 with compounded health issues, he moved into nursing home/memory care. Despite the issues of age and health he continued to be in good spirits and good natured.

Robert is survived by son Orson (Stephanie) Opheim; grandchildren Evelyn & Eli Opheim; brother and sister-in-law Frank and Brita Opheim; sisters Shirley Opheim and Helen Hilsendager; niece and nephew Kristin Opheim and Erik Opheim; as well as numerous cousins.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ina, daughter Chloe, and brother-in-law Gordon Hilsendager.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Chapel on Saturday.
