Hennen: The reason you are paying more at the pump? Joe Biden

"I recently asked Lynn Helms, North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources Director for the facts that rarely get reported," columnist Scott Hennen writes. "Helms tells us there is a full-on assault against our oil and gas industry in North Dakota coming from the Biden Administration."

President Joe Biden is lying about the reason for the high cost of gasoline. He is lying about the impediments facing oil and gas developers. Biden wants you to believe that he is not responsible for oil drilling being curtailed in the United States. Don't believe a word of what he is saying when it comes to oil and gas development.

I recently asked Lynn Helms, North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources Director for the facts that rarely get reported. Helms tells us there is a full-on assault against our oil and gas industry in North Dakota coming from the Biden Administration. Their climate change agenda is one of the many excuses they use.

Have you heard the countless claims that they were encouraging companies to lease and drill? Well did you know they have failed to hold the third quarter 2022 oil and gas lease? That is impacting 141 parcels in North Dakota waiting for a lease. They also have missed the deadline for a fourth quarter lease sale, which blocks several spacing units located around Lake Sakakawea. These are highly sought-after acres that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Forest Service have cleared for leasing. But Joe says no. All of this is a violation of the Mineral Practices Act, but this White House doesn't follow its own rules.

Have you heard the whopper from the Biden Administration that there are multiple available leases for oil and gas companies to utilize? We have many examples of how ridiculous that claim is. Helms tells us that the administration has partnered up with a non-government organization known as "Earth Guardians" (as if North Dakotans need some out-of-state political activists to show us how to take care of our natural resources). This agreement requires the administration to not permit any of these leases until a National Environmental Policy Act analysis is done on all leases in seven states dating back to February 2015. That's outrageous and makes it obvious that NEPA is being used as an onerous tool to slow drilling, which is exactly what Team Biden wants to happen.

We should all be very afraid when third party organizations are deployed to monitor oil and gas emissions and report "suspected violations," all of which will need to be investigated within five to 15 days. What the heck is that? Trust me, these organizations will not be friendly to oil and gas development and they will use their newfound power to shut down drilling. It's also an overreach beyond what Congress authorized the Environmental Protection Agency to do.

Helms says, "On every single front, from the Department of Interior to the Department of Agriculture to the EPA, it's a full-on attack on North Dakota's oil and gas industry." He also reminds us that this creates "unbelievable uncertainty" for operators.

Meanwhile happy talk continues from the White House claiming they are doing nothing to impede development. "Nothing could be further from the truth," Helms says.
