Nodland: Know who you're voting for in June Primary
"The more research you can do on a person who is running for an office, the better decision you can make on which candidate you will feel comfortable voting for," writes George Nodland.
I am sitting in my den watching the snow melt after the record snowfall we received the last two weeks. The snow removal process will be a daunting task, but the moisture is much needed and a welcome for everyone. I do feel sorry for the ranchers who are calving at this time. It is no fun dealing with wet snow and a wet calf. But, the potential greener pastures and a larger hay crop ease the pain!
Now that the people who are running in the June14th Primary Election in North Dakota have filled their petitions, it is interesting to see the amount of new people who are running for various school board, city, county and state offices. Many of the legislative districts have changed due to the 10-year census redistricting, which have caused new people to run for office. Also, more people are interested in government activities today at all levels of government.
The fact that more people are interested in government activities is good for our country. But, the concern I have is why some of the people are running for office. Some people have a personal agenda on their mind and would not represent the citizens in their respective offices. This would not be good for the public. I suggest that you pay close attention to each candidate who is running for office this year.
I have a few points that I look for in each candidate that I recommend for the public:
- Find out the candidate’s personal view of the respective office they are running for represents and the requirements for the office.
- Do they know what the public expects of them?
- If they have served in an office before; check their voting record and activities in the office.
- Find someone who knows the candidate and get their opinion of the person.
- Find someone who has worked with the candidate and get their opinion of the person.
The more research you can do on a person who is running for an office, the better decision you can make on which candidate you will feel comfortable voting for.
The future of our city, county, state and country is more important now than it has ever been with the different issues today! Make sure you vote this year! It is your right and duty as a citizen of the United States of America!
