Letter: Learning is a team sport
I read with considerable interest the excellent article by DSU President Tom Mitzel (The Role of education as technology changes the world) in the Dickinson Press on November 4th. He emphasizes the role of the university campus in providing a laboratory for interaction among students and between students and the teacher.
This suggests to me that learning is like a team sport. In team sports you need good athletes but they must learn to interact with each other under the leadership of a good coach (teacher) in order to create a winning program. This is called ‘team chemistry’ in athletics. The university campus allows for the application of team chemistry to the learning process. Certainly as Dr. Mitzel points out, new technology can and will contribute in many ways but is not a substitute for the personal interaction of individuals.
