3 Blue Hawks still competing at NAIA national wrestling

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Three Dickinson State wrestlers are still alive in the NAIA national wrestling tournament and two are guaranteed All-American status.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Three Dickinson State wrestlers are still alive in the NAIA national wrestling tournament and two are guaranteed All-American status.

Bryden Lazaro, Jose Lopez and Brad Steele all lost in the quarterfinals to wrestlers who will compete for national championships today.

Lopez fell to Eric Thompson of Grand View (Iowa) in the heavyweight quarterfinals and then pinned his way through two wrestleback rounds to assure himself a place no lower than sixth on Friday.

Lopez had two third-period pins to get him into the consolation semifinals. He beat John Sievert in 6 minutes, 25 seconds and Leviticus Roberson in 6:46.

Lazaro can also finish no lower than sixth. The 125-pounder was pinned in the quarterfinals by Southern Oregon's Mitchell Lofstedt, the 2010 national champion, in 2:01. He then scored a 16-0 technical fall against Wayland Baptist's Albert Tapia and a 7-1 decision to Gabriel Roman of Missouri Baptist.

Steele is in the seventh-place match against Carey Cloud of William Penn, who he beat 3-2 in overtime in the third round Thursday.

Steele lost to Southern Oregon's Jimmy Eggemeyer by a 9-3 decision in the quarterfinals, beat Michael Gonzalez of Cumberland (Tenn.) 9-6 and then fell Jarell Price of Baker (Kan.) 6-2 in the fifth round of wrestlebacks.

Jesse Hellinger (184) won a pair in the wrestlebacks before losing his fourth-round wrestleback match to Robert Shadrach of Baker by a 4-3 decision.

Senior Adam Orton (141), junior Colton Hill (285) and freshman Clayton Steinmetz (133) all scored one wrestleback win before bowing out.

Orton beat Tyler Klinkhammer of Bacone (Okla.) before succumbing to his teammate, Christian Hernandez in a 19-2 technical fall.

Hill and Steinmetz each had pins in their opening wrestleback matches before falling.

Sergio Martinez (125) and Robert Meador (141) each lost out in their first wrestleback match.
