First chance at Last Chance: After sitting out 6 weeks, Killdeer’s Dobitz and Rohr qualify for state meet

For the first six weeks of the season, Killdeer seniors Lewis Dobitz and Trenton Rohr stood on the sidelines as their track and field team competed without them.

Dobitz and Rohr were forced to sit out due to training rule violations.

The Trinity Last Chance Meet was the first opportunity Dobitz and Rohr had to compete in the 2015 track and field season on Tuesday at the Biesiot Activities Center.

“It felt really good coming back,” Dobitz said. “It was tough having to go to practice when everyone else was at meets.”

Rohr added: “Not being able to compete in meets every week, coaches do a pretty good job of having us run in practice and compete against each other.”

The Cowboys didn’t have any state-qualifiers on the boys team prior to Tuesday, but they collected a pair of state-qualifying times in the 800-meter relay (50.67) and Dobitz in the 400 dash (1:32.57). Dobitz’ 400 dash time is ranked second in Class B to Blake Hollingsworth of Oakes.

Dobitz and Rohr both said they apologized to the team for the early-season infraction.

“It was a mistake that we made and we learned from it,” Dobitz said. “We assured the team that we knew they could compete without us. We have really good teammates, we respect each other and trust each other.”

Rohr promised the team a trip to the North Dakota Class B state track and field meet and delivered on that guarantee.

The 800 relay team included Dobitz, Rohr, Caleb Musick and Hunter Lincoln. The Cowboys are the defending Class B state champions in that event.

“I let the guys know that I made a big mistake and I promised them that we would be going to state and thank God we qualified today,” Rohr said.

Killdeer boys head coach Nathan Horgeshimer said Dobitz and Rohr will go through the initial phases of knocking off the rust, but he knows the two will be ready for the final two meets.

“Some of the shorter races, where there’s a little bit of block work things are things we struggled with today, but it wasn’t a bad day,”Horgeshimer said. “We got a few things qualified which is nice to have some breathing room.”

In total on the boys side, there were five of either new or improved state-qualifiers.

Mott-Regent sophomore Brady Wegh collected a state-qualifying time in the 110 hurdles at 15.91 seconds.

The Bowman County 3,200 relay team of David Chavez, Cole Osendorf, Alex Madrigal and Alex Bartholomay started the running events with a state-qualifying time of 8:30.90.

Trinity sophomore and defending Class B 100 dash champion Dawson Kram had two shots at improving his time in the event. Due to a timing error, the first heat of the 100 dash had to run again. Kram supplied a time of 11.01 seconds, which ranks third in Class B.

The girls side had four new state-qualifiers, but Trinity junior Kennedy Keator and Mott-Regent sophomore Ellie Messmer improved their marks in the long jump.

Trinity eighth-grader Masy Kuntz qualified in her first individual event for the state meet with a distance of 16 feet, 5 inches in the long jump.

“I am extremely happy I qualified,” Kuntz said. “That was my goal all year was to qualify in the long jump.”

Killdeer’s Shawnee Hansen qualified in the 400 at 1:01.10. Richardton-Taylor senior Emily Tyrrell added the 3,200 run (12:10.34) and Dickinson High junior Kelsey Calhoun — who is a two-time Class A state placer in the javelin — threw a qualifying mark in the event at 118-4.

Tyrrell wasn’t necessarily searching for a state-qualifying time in the 3,200 run, because she knew it would happen eventually.

“I wasn’t really worried about qualifying in the two mile,” said Tyrrell, who placed sixth in the 3,200 run during the 2014 Class B state track and field. “I never really have been. It’s one of those things that I trust it will happen, so if I didn’t get it today then I was going to go after it at regionals.”

Keator and Messmer each improved their distance in the long jump by at least two inches. Keator is ranked in the top 10 after a jump of 17-3, while Messmer sits at 16-10.

Kuntz said it will be beneficial to learn from Keator during the state meet.

“She’s going help out a lot,” Kuntz said. “She always has tips and I’m thankful for that.”

However, before traveling to the state meet, the teams will compete in the Southwest Regional Track and Field Meet at 8 a.m. Saturday in Bowman.

“We just have to do the little things and not force anything,” Horgeshimer said. “We have a lot of work to do. We have some relays and some sprinters that have qualified in the past that we hope to get in. We got about four field event guys that right there knocking on the door. Hopefully, we have a good day in Bowman.”
