The Badlands Big Sticks will send eight players to the Expedition League All Star game next week. The game will be played at Corbett Field in Minot, North Dakota on July 16th.
Outfielders Nathan Sanders, Mason Schwellenbach, and Kaimana Souza-Paaluhi were selected for the game along with infielders Bryson Ford and Conner VanCleave and pitchers Malik Barrington, Tyler Chipman and Dallas Bryan.
“This just goes to show you that we have a pretty good team we have put together,” said Big Sticks General Manager Jason Watson.”We are doing good things as a league and the Big Sticks. The community treats the players well. The players are enjoying their time in Dickinson.”
VanCleave, a player at the University of Kansas, has been wreaking terror on opposing pitchers lately. He leads the league in RBI’s by a wide margin with 62, and also has nine home runs.
“Conner is a big kid and produces big hits. He is a good player and clutch with runners in scoring position,” Watson said.
Ford has been on a roll at the plate lately too as he hit grand slams on consecutive nights this past weekend against the Wheat City Whiskey Jacks. He leads the league in batting with a .410 average.
Schwellenbach, who attends Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri, is tied for the league lead in home runs with VanCleave.
“Mason started hot, but cooled a little toward the middle of the year,” said Watson. “The last 10 games he has been seeing the ball well. He has stepped up for us.”
Sanders has been a force behind the plate as well. He has eight home runs with 36 RBI’s and 24 stolen bases.
Souza-Paaluhi is teammates with VanCleave in college. He is batting .338 and has 21 RBI’s for the summer.
On the mound, Barrington leads the Expedition League in strikeouts with 58. He has a 4-1 record with an ERA of 3.17.
Chipman has 31 strikeouts in 31 innings of work. His record is 5-1 with a 4.26 ERA. He attends Gonzaga University.
Rounding out the Big Sticks All Stars is Bryan who is a relief pitcher. Bryan has an ERA of 3.95 with 14 strikeouts and only four walks in 13.2 innings pitched.
The Big Sticks play a four game series vs. Pierre before the All Star break starts next week.
