Bison softball team to play defending national champion Oklahoma
FARGO—Making its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last nine years, North Dakota State's softball team found out Sunday night, May 14, it will be traveling to Norman, Okla.—the same place where the Bison won a 2009 regional.
The Bison, with a 28-31 record, will play host to defending national champion Oklahoma (50-8) in a 1:30 p.m. game Friday, May 19. The Bison earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament by beating Indiana Purdue-Indianapolis in two straight championship games, 13-4 and 5-3, Saturday, May 13, at NDSU's Ellig Sports Complex.
In their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009, NDSU won a regional title at Oklahoma before losing in the best-of-three series Super Regional at Arizona State.
Florida, a team that beat the Bison 13-0 on March 15, earned a top seed for the tournament. Other seeded teams the Bison played include: Mississippi, a No. 12 seed that beat the Bison 1-0 on Feb. 11; Auburn, a No. 7 seed that beat the Bison 2-1 on March 17; and Arizona, a No. 2 seed that beat the Bison 2-1 on Feb. 19.
The Bison have posted an 8-14 record in its seven previous NCAA Tournament appearances. Here's a look at how the Bison have done in the NCAA tournament:
2016: In the Seattle Regional, the Bison lost to No. 15 Minnesota 7-2, defeated Weber State 5-2 and lost to Minnesota 7-5. The Bison finished with a 39-15 record.
2015: In the Eugene Regional, the Bison beat Fresno State 4-0, lost to No. 1 Oregon 4-3, beat Brigham Young 7-0 and lost to Oregon 6-1. The Bison finished with a 45-11 record.
2014: In the Minneapolis Regional, the Bison beat No. 21 Auburn 5-2, lost to No. 14 Minnesota 4-1 and lost to No. 21 Auburn 1-0. The Bison finished with a 36-18 record.
2012: In the Tucson Regional, the Bison lost to No. 15 Arizona 11-0, beat No. 13 Hawaii 9-7 and lost to Notre Dame 8-4. The Bison finished with a 38-22 record.
2011: In the Tempe Regional, the Bison lost to No. 1 Arizona State 10-0 and lost to San Diego State 5-4. The Bison finished with a 30-27 record.
2010: In the Seattle Regional, the Bison lost to No. 1 Washington 3-0 and lost to Nebraska 5-1. The Bison finished with a 33-25 record.
2009: In the Norman Regional, the Bison beat No. 9 Oklahoma 1-0, beat Tulsa 3-2 and 4-1. In the Tempe Super Regional, the Bison lost to No. 9 Arizona State 3-0 and 11-0. The Bison finished with a 38-20 record.
