The Dickinson High girls swimming and diving team ended their dual with Minnesota Moorhead on a good note.

Hailey Rathgeber, Charley Rathgeber, Kara Wanner and Korie Riely teamed up to win the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of four minutes and 0.2 seconds, the only win for the Midgets on Friday, Oct. 27 at the West River Community Center.

The Midgets earned 68 points, falling to the Spuds who earned 114.

"It was really good to see that last relay," head coach Jenna Wolf said. "That 4:00.02 is really close to their fastest time this season of a 3:59 so it's good to see them get really close and winning one event at least and getting the mood going at the end."

The Midget's 200-yard freestyle relay team, comprised of Hannah Rathgeber, Brianna Ashworth, Wanner and Riely, missed out on first place by 0.29 seconds.

Wanner took second in the individual 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.91 seconds, just 0.14 seconds behind Spuds swimmer Emmy Seljevold.

"She was gaining on her in the end," Wolf said of Wanner. "But she just got out-touched at the end when she was down a little bit."

Dickinson High is nearing the end of its season with two weeks until the state meet. Wolf said her swimmers have been tapering off their yardage at practice, a training technique that usually helps competitors see faster times at the end of the season.

"They swam 'off' events today just to get times in those events," Wolf said. "We're waiting to swim some of their 'on' events in WDA and State."

The Midgets aren't used to competing against a team as large as the Spuds, but Hailey Rathgeber wasn't intimidated.

"I was like, 'I'm just going to swim my hardest,'" Rathgeber said. "That's it."

Rathgeber swam the 50-yard freestyle in 27.57 seconds, earning her fourth place just ahead of Hannah Rathgeber who swam it in 28.34 seconds.

Riely earned second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:08.15.

The Midgets host an invitational Saturday morning too, but Wolf said that didn't seem to hold her team back at all.

"They did really well," Wolf said. "It's good to see higher seeded competition."
