Not done yet: Midgets advance to tournament with win over Williston
The Dickinson High volleyball team's season was on the line.
The Midgets hosted Williston for a play-in game to advance to the Western Dakota Association tournament in Mandan.
The Midgets ended the night in three quick sets with scores of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-15, at the DHS gymnasium on Thursday, Nov. 2, ending Williston's season.
"You got to come in and get a win to extend your season and right now we're playing as good a volleyball as we played (all season)," head coach Jay Schobinger said. "The last week and a half we've taken a set from the number one and the number three team in our conference and I think our kids are starting to play with a little more confidence."
The Midgets earned the first four points of the opening set, but the Coyotes soon tied it at five. Dickinson pulled ahead though and came through with the 25-19 win.
The Dickinson offense was firing on all cylinders, with senior middle hitter Morgan Kainz leading the way with 13 kills.
"We put the ball in system quite a bit," Schobinger said. "If she can go get something, she gets up fast and it's pretty tough to defend her when we get her the ball in the middle."
Senior outside hitter Peyton Selle followed with eight kills and led the team with four aces. She also added 12 digs and one block.
Junior setter Lauren Jorda led the Midgets with 15 digs and 34 assists.
"The last few games that we played, Jamestown, Belcourt, Legacy, we had three really good games, win or lose," Kainz said. "It's really late but we're finally starting to get everything together. It's finally all clicking together and we're starting to do really good things."
The Coyotes held their only lead of the night, 4-3, early in the second set. The Midgets went on a six-point run to pull ahead 9-4. They held the lead the rest of the night.
Williston senior Danielle Stauffer led the Coyotes with six kills, one ace and two blocks. Senior middle hitter Kaia Wenstad contributed three kills and three blocks.
The Midgets took a 4-0 lead in the third set, just as they did in the first. The Coyotes tied it at six, and the teams exchanged points until the Midgets led 11-10. Dickinson then went on a 7-1 run to take an 18-11 lead. They only allowed four more points before earning the 25-15 win.
"We've had a good energy for the past couple weeks now," Schobinger said. "A lot of it is realizing that we can play with the good teams. Now realizing that if we play well, we can beat them."
