Despite falling short of competing in the 1-meter diving finals during the boys state swimming and diving meet, Dawson Wilson, a freshman on the Dickinson High boys swimming and diving team, earned first-team All-State honors on Saturday, March 2. He also teamed with senior Isaac Ellerkamp, sophomore Taven Wilson and Mason Beck in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing eighth while establishing a new school record with a time of one minute, 46.44 seconds.

DP: What did it mean to you be selected to the All-State team?

DW: "Well, I've been trying really hard, this is my third year in diving. For my first two years, I really didn't have a coach, and this year, I actually had a dive coach and she's been pushing me harder. To become first-team All-State, it's a big honor."

DP: After a successful season, what would you like to improve for the future?

DW: "I'd like to improve cleaning up my dives, getting up higher, doing higher DD dives, and working out there to get in the top-3."

DP: What was it like having Coach Steckler as the team's head coach this year?

DW: "Coach Steckler has been a new improvement to what we had in the past with Mike Sullivan. And she's been very successful this year, and she's been pushing us hard to get better times, better dives."

DP: Who is your funniest teammate?

DW: "Funniest teammate? I would say it's probably Mason Beck. He does a lot of funny stuff that we all laugh about ... Yeah, he's one of the funniest."

DP: Who was your favorite athlete growing up?

DW: "Favorite athlete growing up? That would be probably Michael Phelps because in the Olympics, he's widely known. We watch the Olympics for swimming and we see that he's won a lot of gold medals."

DP: Either/or: Snapchat or Instagram?

DW: "I'm not big on Instagram, so I'd probably do Snapchat."

DP: Country Music or Hip Hop?

DW: "I would do Hip-Hop music. That's what me and my brother (play) when we are in the car. That's what we usually listen to."

DP: When eating a meal, what is most satisfying: the first bite or last bite?

DW: "I would say the last bite, because at least you got it all done and that you ate all your food."

DP: Are you a good dancer or a bad dancer?

DW: "It matters what you call a good dancer. I can do some mild moves, but I would say that I'm one of the decent dancers, right in the middle."

DP: Swimming or any other sport?

DW: "I'd rather do swimming, because it pushes you harder and it gets to get better in other sports. And it gets you more riled up and has a lot of adrenaline going into you."

DP: What is your first sports memory?

DW: "My first sports memory. When I was like seven, I started swimming because my parents put me in swimming for a winter sport. I state-qualified in the 50 free and the 100 back, and I was so proud of myself."
