DEVILS LAKE - Scoring in all but one inning, the Dickinson High softball team opened its series against Devils Lake with an 8-1 victory. The offense outdid itself in game two, sweeping the Firebirds 22-0 in five innings on Friday, May 10.

Freshman Mataya Mortensen was on the mound for all of game one, allowing one run on five hits. She also struck out eight while walking one. At the plate, she recorded one of two Midgets doubles.

Senior Kamryn Kuntz, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs, earned the other double, plating two runs in the top of the second inning.

Game two lasted just five innings as the freshman Hope Fath and seventh-grader Ava Jahner combined to shutout Devils Lake while allowing just two hits.

The Midgets (16-6, 6-4 WDA) mounted six runs in the opening frame behind doubles from senior Brianna Ashworth and freshman Taya Hopfauf.

Kamryn Kutnz, junior Taylor Nelson, sophomore Paige Balliet and relief pitcher Jahner all recorded a double.

After a five-run second and a timid two-run third, the visitors erupted again, putting up eight runs in the fourth inning.

Firebirds starting pitcher Genna Fee loaded the bases with back-to-back walks following a single from Kennedy Kuntz. Junior Emy Personne singled to score Kuntz, then Mortensen reached on a fielder’s choice that got junior Ali Lafond out at third, but plated another run, bringing the advantage to 15-0.

After Fee walked another and gave up two singles, game one starter Abby Johnson took over on the bump. She walked the first two batters she saw, bringing two more runs in to make the score 21-0 before Devils Lake retired the side.
