BISMARCK - At the end of the Class A State Track and Field Meet, individuals and relay teams have the chance to walk away as a state champions in 38 events.

For the fortunate few, it's a chance to bask in the glory following all the hard work put in throughout the season. For Dickinson High's Brady Yoder, his results at the most importantly meet of the year means it's time to get back to the drawing board.

On the opening day of the meet, Yoder suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Bismarck High sophomore Sean Korsmo in the 1,600-meter run, as the Midgets' sophomore was denied a state title by four one-hundredths of a second.

One day later on Saturday, May 25, Yoder again was at the front of the field, but was passed by Korsmo on the last lap of the 3,200.

Korsmo crossed the finish line in 9 minutes, 32.05 seconds. For the second day in a row, Yoder was a runner-up to Korsmo, recording a time of 9:32.81.

"It definitely just means I have more work to do," Yoder said. "I know Aiden (Jung) and I are going to be working really hard in the summer; more goals and things we have left to do."

With three laps remaining, Yoder ran by Williston junior Micade Shumway for the lead. Yoder paced the field until the final lap when Korsmo, who was in second, darted to the outside with 200 meters remaining and sped by the leader. As the two sophomores sprinted down the stretch, Yoder tried to make up the difference couldn't catch the eventual winner.

"I wanted the race to go faster. It was a fun group, and we ended up not taking off too fast or fast enough," Yoder said. "So I tried to change that in the second half of the race and tried to make up for it, but obviously didn't make up for it enough."

Including his second place at the state cross country meet last fall, Yoder has finished second to Korsmo in the three biggest races of the season. However, he left the MDU Resources Community Bowl with his head held high.

"It felt pretty good, I was just happy with how I did. ... It was a lot of fun. I just did the main thing, which is do the best that I can, and that's all I can hope for," Yoder said.

Jung, a Dickinson High junior, took eighth in the event. Over the course of the weekend, the duo combined to score 19 of the Midgets 28 overall points as the team finished seventh overall.

For the fourth time in the last five years, Bismarck Century won the meet, collecting 137 points.

Competing in the shot put, senior Ethan Grove earned sixth, as did sophomore Mustafa Taylor in the 200. Taylor teamed with Jung, senior Nathaniel Frimpong, sophomore Ethan Rixen and freshman Quentin Lewis to a sixth-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay.

Emotional ride for Rodakowski, Tormaschy

Audrey Rodakowski had her ups and downs during her first flight in the shot put.

The Dickinson High junior barely hit the state-qualifying mark in her initial throw, but in Rodakowski's view, it calmed her down, allowing her to "let my nerves go."

On the outside looking in before her final throw in the first flight, Rodakowski made it into the finals, surpassing Bismarck High junior McKenna Shelkey's mark of 38 feet, 2 ¾ inches. Her rally not only secured a spot on the podium, it meant she got to compete one last time with her teammate, senior Alanta Tormaschy.

With a mark of 39-11, Rodakowski took fifth, one spot behind Tormaschy. Afterward, the junior tried to describe what it was like throwing with her teammate, but could not do so without the emotions getting to her.

Tormaschy responded by saying, "Don't cry," but it was too late.

"Getting into finals after that third throw, the weight literally lifted off my shoulders. I felt 100 times better," Rodakowski said while unsuccessfully holding back tears. "Knowing that me and the (Bismarck High) girl only had a half an inch between us for a placing, I know I had to beat her. Knowing that the last throw was with Alanta, I wanted to make it special."

Tormaschy earned fourth with a mark of 40-02.25.

"I'm really happy that I ended my season with my best throw, my last throw of my career, I guess," Tormaschy said. "I'm pretty happy with it."

Collecting nine points from the shot put and earning 10 points with senior Gabby Jung's victory in the high jump on Friday, the Dickinson High girls track and field team finished eighth with a total of 37 points. For the fourth consecutive season, Fargo Davies captured the state title with 171 points.

Peyton Selle had a strong day on the track for the Midgets. The junior took sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47 flat. She later improved her placing in the 100 hurdles, capturing third after running the race in 15.82 seconds.

In the pole vault, two Midgets were on the podium as junior Brailyn Betlaf was tied for seventh while senior Meghan Ackerman was tied for fourth. Coupled with a sixth-place finish in the triple jump one day earlier, Ackerman was pleased with her performance.

"The emotions are high. I was aiming for top-three or better in the pole vault, but today, honestly, knowing that I'm done ... I just need to be satisfied with what I have right now," Ackerman said. "Yesterday, in triple jump, that boosted my confidence for today. I didn't get the height I wanted, but fourth, I'll take it."
