The Dickinson State volleyball team was unable to come away with the victory Saturday, losing in a 3-0 sweep at home against Dakota State.
After losing in a 3-0 sweep to No. 15 Bellevue University on Friday, The Blue Hawks continued to struggle with its woes and, despite contesting with the Trojans in the first and third set, the effort was not enough. They fell in the sets 25-17, 25-13 and 25-19. Outside hitters sophomore Cassie North and junior Abby Moerkerke led the Blue Hawks both, recording seven kills. Senior setter Keera Stookey led the team in assists with 11.
“We’ve had better days honestly,” head coach Jennifer Willis said. “I just felt like it was definitely an off day, we came out really flat and we just didn’t play our game throughout the whole match and Dakota State did, so it (was) definitely not our day.”
The Trojans started the first set by scoring the first three points in the match. However, the Blue Hawks managed to briefly tie the game at four before the Trojans took a 6-4 lead and did not allow the Blue Hawks another chance at tying the game. With the Blue Hawks trailing 18-10, the team would go on a 6-1 run and narrow the score to 19-15, but the Trojans would follow it up with a 6-2 run to end the first set at 25-17.
The Blue Hawks battled harder early in the second set, taking a brief one-point lead three times but with the score tied at four, the Trojan went on an 11-2 run and took a 14-6 lead. The Trojans then took full advantage of the set and won 25-15.
The Trojans looked to continue their domination and take the sweep victory. With the Blue Hawks leading the set 3-2, the Trojans went on a 4-0 drive to take a 6-3 lead. However, the Blue Hawks continued to battle, countered with a 5-0 run and took the lead with an 8-6 score. The Trojans never wavered and would route back with a deep 9-2 run to take a 15-11 score. Dickinson State attempted to make another deep push, but Dakota State did not allow the team to score more than two consecutive points before stopping their runs. The Trojans ended the game with a 25-19 set victory and take the sweep.
With the loss, the Blue Hawks end the weekend and prepare for a road game against No. 4 Viterbo University on Oct. 25.
“We just got to come into practice and get better,” Willis said. “They can’t stay complacent, we just got to work harder this week and get better.”
