On to the playoffs for the Dickinson High School volleyball team!
In a play-in matchup against Williston, Dickinson knew it was all or nothing. With that mindset, they put it all out on the court and left nothing to question, taking a solid 3-0 sweep victory over the Coyotes and advancing to the WDA playoffs.
Senior Peyton Selle led the team with 14 kills, five aces and 13 digs. Senior middle hitter Audrey Rodakowski helped with four kills, three aces, six blocks and eight digs.
“We’ve given ourselves a chance (in playoffs). We’re in a bracket with some teams we think we can compete with, so we’re feeling pretty good about where we’re at and … we gave ourselves a chance, and that’s all we can ask for,” head coach Jay Schobinger said.
In the first set, senior outside hitter Peyton Selle helped the team early on, scoring four of the team’s first five points. The Midgets later used the momentum and went on a 7-1 run to take a 12-5 lead over the Coyotes. The Midgets would later go on a 5-2 run, followed by a 6-0 run to take the first set 25-12.
In the second set, the Midgets started with a 2-0 lead with back-to-back kills coming by Selle and Rodakowski. The Midgets continued to push the tempo in set two, but a 4-1 run helped the Coyotes narrow the gap to 14-12. However the Midgets took a 10-4 run and eventually closed the set with a block by Rodakowski to take the set 25-19.
In the third set, with the team’s season dangling on a thread, the Coyotes attempted to push back and attempt to take set three, never allowing the Midgets to take a large lead. The Midgets started the match 6-3, but the Coyotes tied the game. They would eventually tie the set seven times throughout, and at one time took a brief 16-14 lead, their first lead of the game.
The Midgets continued to hold strong tempo at the net, making it difficult for the Coyotes to find a spot to place its kill attempt, and the Midgets eventually forced the set to be tied at 20. From there, with the help of three aces by sophomore defensive specialist Taya Hopfauf, the Midgets closed out the night with a 5-0 run, and punched their ticket into the playoffs.
“Williston picked it up defensively a little bit. They weren’t sending the ball back in the first two sets, so they picked it up a little defensively,” Schobinger said.
With the win, the Midgets will now prepare for the WDA playoffs, which will begin next week.
