The Dickinson High School girls basketball team couldn’t get over the hump on Tuesday night against the Bismarck St. Mary’s Saints.

The Midgets’ losing streak was extended to three with the 59-50 loss, and they dropped to 2-7 overall.

Peyton Selle and Audrey Rodakowski carried Dickinson on offense as they scored 30 of the Midgets’ points. Selle finished with 17, while Rodakowski had 13.

Dickinson’s best chance to cut into the lead came late in the second half.

Down 52-48, Selle steamed down the court with a fast-break opportunity, but she was called for a charge even though she made the basket.

The Saints extended their lead to 10 shortly after to close out the contest.

Dickinson was behind by only seven in the latter stages of the first half, but St. Mary’s went on a run to go into halftime with a 36-25 lead.

The Midgets never trailed by more than 11 in the final 18 minutes, but the closest they got was 4 very early in the second half.

“Every time we made a run, we would shoot ourselves in the foot. We would have a turnover or we wouldn’t block out in a key possession,” Dickinson head coach James Hayden said. “They made us pay for that. That was the difference. We had them on their heels for a good portion of that second half, but every time we got a run, they made a play.”

Despite the 17 points for Selle she went 1-6 from the free throw line, and the Midgets as a team only went 4-11 from the charity stripe.

Sydney Binstock was third on the team in points as she hit two 3’s for six points.

For the Saints, Abbi Kopp led them with 18 points.

All night long, Dickinson had trouble on the boards due to the Saints’ height.

“Two of their girls are 6-foot-2. (Rebounding and blocking out) was a strong suit of theirs. It was a huge emphasis going into this game, and it was something I wanted to repeat to my girls nonstop,” said Hayden.

The Midgets will take on Bismarck High on the road on Thursday.
