Five early season contests for the Trinity Titans volleyball team has led to five sweeps.
The Titans celebrated senior night earlier than usual on Tuesday night, and they jumped out to an early lead and never relented in their 3-0 victory over Glen Ullin/Hebron.
“We wanted to have senior night early. At this point and time, we don’t know when our last game could be,” Trinity head coach Breanna Sisson said. “We have eight seniors and one senior manager who have put a lot of work in over the years. Tonight was a really good night for them.”
The two teams battled early with Trinity (5-0) taking an 8-5 lead in set one, but they turned on the afterburners going on a 12-3 run to take a 20-8 lead. They went on to win the set, 25-14.
Senior libero Asia Willer totaled three aces in the first set in what was foreshadowing of what was to come.
She opened up the second set with aces to score points three, four and five, then she recorded three more in a row to give Trinity a commanding 10-0 lead early in the set.
“We try to serve certain spots on the floor and Asia does a good job of serving aggressively,” Sisson said. “She knows that if she is aggressive, then it can pull the other team out of their system. We have always been very strong and very smart at the service line.”
After winning the second set 25-11, the Titans dominated the Bearcats (1-5) in the final set.
Junior Kali Kubas recorded an ace midway through the set making the score 16-8, then a few points later Asia Willer found the floor on the serve, and Trinity went on to win 25-9 on a kill by senior Nicolette Reis.
“We have talked a lot about having a sense of urgency and our seniors know that we have to do that every game,” Sisson said. “We don’t know when our last game may be and if we will finish the season so we want to have a sense of urgency every time we come on the court.”
Asia Willer had a team high 12 aces, while Kali Kubas totaled six.
Amaya Willer led the Titans with nine kills, while Abbey Kubas and Anna Kessel each had six.
Kali Kubas led the match with 24 assists.
“We have had a good preseason and early season, but we know that we are starting to get into the bulk of our season where it is game after game facing good competition,” Sisson said. “We have to be happy with the games so far, but we also have to keep in mind what is to come.”
The Titans travel down to Hettinger-Scranton on Saturday for a non-region contest.
