Bobby Abplanalp has been hired as the new sports editor of The Dickinson Press.
Abplanalp started Tuesday and comes to The Press after spending nearly three years as the sports editor of the Cortez (Colo.) Journal.
Abplanalp is a native of Logan, Utah, and a graduate of the University of Wyoming, where he was a sports reporter for the student newspaper, The Branding Iron.
"I'm happy for the opportunity to join The Press," Abplanalp said. "I look at it as just that, as an opportunity to enhance my skills, not just as a sports editor and writer, but as an overall journalist. I think this is an opportunity for growth in my career. I'd like to work hard and make this already strong publication even stronger."
Abplanalp's primary focus of coverage will be Dickinson State athletics, though he will report on the entire spectrum of sporting events in southwest North Dakota. Sports reporter Royal McGregor will continue to be the newspaper's primary reporter for high school sports.

"I'm pleased that we have filled our sports editor role with a talented, driven and high-character journalist who will help enhance the content of our newspaper and help The Press continue to provide an award-winning, high-quality sports section," said Press Managing Editor Dustin Monke, who until March had spent 6½ years as the newspaper's sports editor.
