MADISON, S.D. - The No. 5 seed Dickinson State men’s basketball team took a third time’s a charm approach to No. 2 seed Dakota State.
At least that’s what the Blue Hawks thought.
Despite a high level of play and anxious to move on in the North Star Athletic Association conference tournament, the Trojans senior guard Bryant Allen netted a game-high 40 points to lead Dakota State past Dickinson State 85-74 in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Dakota State jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the opening minutes, but the Blue Hawks crawled out of their early deficit and tied the game 17-17 on a Jake Gondrezick field goal with 11:14 left in the half. Dickinson State captured its first lead of the game 24-23 on a free throw from Mack Odenier. The Blue Hawks pulled away for the 36-31 advantage at halftime.
Gondrezick led the Blue Hawks with 19 points - 13 of which came in the first half - and added four assists and three rebounds.
Both teams came out shooting in the second half and exchanged shots for the first 13 minutes. But it was the last seven which were the difference maker.
Ahead 64-63, Dakota State made its move and began to pull away from Dickinson State and built up a 13-point lead with 38 seconds left.
The Trojans barely missed a shot in the second half, hitting 21 of their 27 attempts (78 percent) and finished shooting 62 percent from the field. Allen, who is averaging 16.9 points per game in the NSAA, went 14 for 20 from the field and was 7 for 10 from 3-point range. Cameron Robinson also finished in double figures with 10 points, eight assists, four rebounds and three steals. Miguel Sansavour led the team with eight rebounds and supplied eight points.
Dakota State and Dickinson State battled it out around the perimeter. The Trojans went 11 for 18 and the Blue Hawks were 14 for 28 as Gondrezick made five and senior post Connor Donaldson hit four.
Including Gondrezick, Dickinson State had four players in double figures. Guard Billy Engel scored 12 points, Donaldson finished with 12 points and four rebounds and guard Curtis Redd came off the bench to supply 11 points and four rebounds. Guard Tevin Russell added nine points while post Mackenson Odenier led with five rebounds.
