Azusa Pacific not pursuing Frontier Conference membership

Azusa Pacific sports information director Gary Pine said Friday that the university has opted to not pursue membership in the NAIA's Frontier Conference.

Azusa Pacific sports information director Gary Pine said Friday that the university has opted to not pursue membership in the NAIA's Frontier Conference.

Pine cited the university's decision to continue pursuing membership in NCAA Division II, to which it plans to apply next summer.

"... the university's name was removed from further conversations and speculation about possibly joining the Frontier," Pine said in an e-mail to The Dickinson Press.

In the e-mail, Pine said Azusa Pacific athletic director Bill Odell had informed both Frontier Conference commissioner Kent Paulson and NAIA CEO and President Jim Carr of the decision.

The Frontier had sent seven letters to schools in late September, asking that if they were interested in pursuing membership in the conference, that they submit a membership application by Oct. 29.

Azusa Pacific, located east of Los Angeles in Azusa, Calif., had told the Frontier it was interested in joining as an associate member in football only.

The Frontier also sent letters to Dickinson State, Jamestown College, Mayville State, Valley City State, Southern Oregon University and Menlo College (Calif.).

Dickinson State officials said they will be applying for full membership in the conference.
