Pierre powers over Big Sticks

PIERRE, S.D. — In the first outing of a five-game series between the two teams, Pierre scored in all but one inning to blowout the Badlands Big Sticks 17-3 on Friday, July 13, at Hyde Stadium.

Big Sticks right fielder Aaron Fritts hit a solo home run in the top of the first, but the Trappers scored 12 unanswered runs to take a 12-1 lead after five innings.

Badlands starting pitcher Connor Grytdal lasted 4.2 innings, giving up the 12 runs on 14 hits while striking out two. Benson Kramer came in as relief. He closed out the fifth, then gave up two runs in the sixth.

The Big Sticks added two runs in the top of the sixth, though, thanks to RBIs from first baseman Jake Thurber and center fielder Auggie Francis.

With his team down 14-3, Big Sticks head coach Hayden Pewitt got creative. Not wanting to waste an arm, especially in a one-sided game, he put shortstop Wyatt Setian on the mound. With help from a double play and a fly-out, Setian threw just six pitches.

In the next inning, Thurber took to the bump. He struck out Trapper Anthony Fidanza, who typically pitches, but then walked two and allowed a run. Pewitt put Karson Backer in to close things out.

The infield didn't help out the pitchers much, committing five errors with Grytdal earning one as well.

To keep with the trend of players in odd positions, Badlands left-handed pitcher Clay Wilson got in a chance at the plate, hitting a soft ball to the pitcher for the final out of the game.

Hometown boy Spencer Sarringar led Pierre at the plate, going 4-for-5, hitting a home run and driving in five runs on the evening.

Right hander Seth Brewer picked up the win for the Trappers, throwing six innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out two.
