MANDAN -- Beulah got started off on the right foot in defense of its Class B baseball state championship Thursday.
Behind 15 hits and eight runs in the sixth inning, Beulah cruised past Thompson High 14-3 in the opening round of the Class B state tournament at Veteran's Memorial Ballpark.
Karson Hintz hit 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Cody Nelson was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Hintz and Mark Muscha each supplied home runs for the Miners.
The Miners (17-1) move onto the semifinals to play the Grafton Spoilers -- a rematch of last year's state title game -- today at 7 p.m. (MDT).
Beulah edged Grafton 5-3 in eight innings to win the 2012 Class B state championship.

The Spoilers blanked Minot Ryan 5-0 in the opening round.
