DICKINSON – With their backs to the wall and carrying a 4-9 deficit into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Big Sticks scored 6 runs in their final two frames to drop the Spearfish (SD) Sasquatch (0-2) for the second-consecutive night, while closer Kyler Beekman shut down the opposition with a pair of strikeouts to take the save.

It was a white-knuckle ride for the Big Sticks throughout the early to middle innings, despite drawing first-blood in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. It was a two-out rally of sorts with outfielder Joe Osborn getting to first on a walk and he was driven home on an RBI double from Danny Rogers, who also was responsible for a grand-slam homer and 6 RBI the night before during the Big Sticks season- and home-opener.

But the Sasquatch showed up out of nowhere with a 3-run second inning, scoring on a single from Trey Vorwald that plated Daniel Thiessen to tie the game and adding a couple more runs to take a 3-1 advantage. Spearfish added to their total in the top of the third off a Big Sticks error to take a 4-1 lead, but the home team responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame as center-fielder Quade Peters singled and was later scored on a single to center from Cooper Hill to close the deficit to 2-4.

Spearfish added to the Big Sticks' misery with 2 more runs in the fourth inning, but Badlands came back with a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly from right-fielder Cam Credeur that plated third-baseman Preston Jones and a single by Peters that scored Isaac Huettl to make the score 6-4 and keep the game tight.

The seventh inning was thrilling for both teams, as the Sasquatch snuck in 3 runs on on a line-out to left, a single and a ground-out, but the Big Sticks responded with an RBI single from Dickinson State infielder Balas Buckmaster that scored Osborn, while another run came across the plate on a throwing error by Spearfish that scored Hill, who had reached first on a walk. Buckmaster and Rogers ended up on second- and third-base, respectively, due to the same error. The inning wasn’t over for Badlands, as Jones singled to score Rogers and then Buckmaster came home on a fielder’s choice from shortstop Alex Urlaub to make the score 8-9 to end the inning and maintain the momentum.

Setup-man Max Martin was able to force a series of groundouts from the Sasquatch in the top of the eighth, and the Big Sticks rewarded him with a win by tying the game on a passed-ball that scored Peters and a ground-ball error by Spearfish second-baseman Chazz Crook that came off the bat of Dickinson native Kobe Krenz and scored Osborn, which closed out the scoring for a Big Sticks victory.
